In the deep, twisting tunnels of the ant kingdom, there were many rooms. There was a room for the queen, a nursery, and many storerooms for food. A whole nation of ants lived in these rooms deep under the ground. Once upon a time, a group of ants went out to search for food to store for the winter. The queen ant divided the ants into three teams.

One team, led by an ant named Murjana, went to Wheat Valley. Another team, led by Lulu, went to Fruit Valley. The third team, led by Zumuruda, went to Thorn Valley—a dry, empty valley with no food at all!

Before the teams set off, their leader gave them a final piece of advice: “Winter is long and cold. We must be serious and responsible and collect all the food we can. Don’t play around, and don’t waste any time!”

All the ants agreed, and the teams marched off in every direction.

Murjana’s Team

The first team arrived in Wheat Valley. Murjana, their leader, said to her hardworking team: “We can’t climb the tall stalks to get just one grain of wheat at the top. That’s a waste of time and energy! We must find an easier and faster way.”

One of the ants replied, “At the end of this valley, the humans have already harvested the wheat. Why don’t we go there, take some of the grains, and return to the kingdom?”

Murjana liked this idea, so the whole team marched toward the harvested wheat. They carried back three dry grains, which were no good for eating or storing, and moved very slowly.

Lulu’s Team

The team that went to Fruit Valley, led by Lulu, wasted a lot of time playing and laughing. Lulu was a weak leader who didn’t want to upset her team. She said to them, hoping they would like her, “Go ahead and laugh and play all you want. When we get back, we can just tell the queen that the humans had already harvested all the fruit and there was nothing left.”

So, the ants spent their time telling jokes, drinking coffee, and eating crumbs from the valley floor. They even made tiny boats from leaves and slid on the water of a small lake!

Zumuruda’s Team

Meanwhile, in Thorn Valley, the third team had arrived. Their leader, Zumuruda, stood on a small stone and gave a speech to the other ants.

“We have been given a very difficult task,” she said. “I know it’s hard to find food here. But if we give up, the kingdom will be hungry in winter, and many will not survive. We must work as hard as we can and not waste a single effort!”

The whole team shouted back, “Yes! We promise not to waste a single effort and to use every bit of wisdom we have!”

Zumuruda and her team worked with great effort. They found a dead butterfly and carried it together. They found a dry grasshopper and pulled it with all their might. They searched and worked and pulled, never giving up.

The story of Kingdom of Ants

As the sun began to set, the three teams returned. The first team had three dry, useless grains that were hard to break and store. The second team came back with wet, empty hands, with signs of play all over their bodies. The third team was a little late!

A court ant whispered to her friend, “One team came back with useless stuff, and the other came back with nothing. The third team must be lost in Thorn Valley and will never return!”

The friend laughed, covering her mouth with her hand so the angry queen wouldn’t see them laughing in such a serious moment. After a little while, Zumuruda’s team arrived with many butterflies and grasshoppers—a huge treasure of food!

The queen looked at the three teams and said, “I sent one team to a valley full of wheat, but they came back with three dry grains that can’t be stored. If we stored them, they would turn into new stalks when the rain comes!

And you, I sent you to a valley full of fruit, but you came back with empty hands and signs of play on your bodies! But the team I sent to an empty, thorny valley came back with enough food for the whole winter!”

Murjana tried to explain, “But the humans were harvesting, and we were afraid of being stepped on, Your Majesty.”

Lulu, feeling brave, also tried to justify herself, “The valley was empty of fruit, Your Majesty. The humans had already taken it all, and nothing was left!”

The queen’s voice was firm and serious. “Don’t make excuses! I know that a leader who is lazy and weak can never inspire a hardworking team. I was only testing you.”

Murjana looked down at the ground, ashamed of her actions. Then the queen added, “A weak leader who has no influence will lose her team to their own desires and games. How can someone without a strong opinion or influence lead a group, when all they care about is pleasing others?”

Lulu lowered her head and couldn’t bring herself to look up, embarrassed by her position. The queen then looked at Zumuruda and said with a happy and pleased voice, “I know that a clever leader is not stopped by challenges or the impossible. She inspires a successful team with encouragement and makes them strong by sharing the responsibility.”

Zumuruda smiled proudly at what her team had accomplished, and the whole team rejoiced in their great achievement.

The queen stood on a small stone and announced, “Zumuruda will be the new leader of all the teams and in charge of the kingdom’s food supply. Murjana and Lulu will be removed from their duties.”

Zumuruda stepped forward to accept her new position. She then led all the ants to the valleys, and they filled the kingdom’s storerooms with good food. The kingdom lived happily all winter because the queen chose the right leader.

The Author’s Message

My dear children, you must take responsibility, as it is the mark of a wise leader. Loving your country and caring for the public good is everyone’s responsibility. Remember, seriousness and hard work are the only things that create strong teamwork, and a weak character is not fit to lead other.
